The Correlation of Gamma - Ray Bursts with Active Galactic Nuclei
نویسندگان
چکیده
We search for angular correlation of gamma-ray bursts with cataloged quasars, BL Lac objects, and AGN using a large sample of relatively well-localized bursts detected by WATCH on board GRANAT and EURECA, IPN, and BATSE (327 bursts total). A statistically significant (99.99% confidence) correlation between GRB and MB < −21 AGN in the redshift range 0.1 < z < 0.32 is found. The correlation with AGN is detected, with a lower significance, in three independent GRB datasets. The correlation amplitude implies that, depending on the AGN catalog completeness, 10% to 100% of bursts with peak fluxes in the range 3 − 30 × 10 −6 erg s −1 cm −2 in the 100–500 keV band are physically related to AGN. The established distance scale corresponds to the energy release of order 10 52 ergs per burst.

A Unified Model of Active Galactic Nuclei, Black Hole X-Ray Sources and Gamma-Ray Bursts
I consider models of active galactic nuclei, stellar-mass accreting black holes and microquasars based on a previously developed (Katz (1997)) model of gamma-ray bursts. When energy fluxes exceed a critical value ∼ 10 erg/cms, as in GRB, a black-body equilibrium pair plasma forms. At the lower fluxes found in AGN, BHXS and microquasars accretion power electrodynamically accelerates a small numb...
متن کاملScaling of Black Hole Accretion Discs from Gamma-Ray Bursts and Black Hole X-Ray Binaries to Active Galactic Nuclei
I consider how physical processes scale over eight orders of magnitude in black hole mass, from stellar masses in gamma-ray bursts (GRB) and black-hole X-ray binaries (BHXRB) to supermassive active galactic nuclei (AGN). Accretion rates onto stellar mass black holes range over more than sixteen orders of magnitude, from the lower luminosity BHXRB to GRB. These enormous parameter ranges correspo...

The arrival directions of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) may show anisotropies on all scales, from just above the experimental angular resolution up to medium scales and dipole anisotropies. We find that a global comparison of the two-point auto-correlation function of the data with the one of catalogues of potential sources is a powerful diagnostic tool. In particular, this method is fa...
متن کاملOn the conversion of blast wave energy into radiation in active galactic nuclei and gamma-ray bursts
It has been suggested that relativistic blast waves may power the jets of AGN and gamma-ray bursts (GRB). We address the important issue how the kinetic energy of collimated blast waves is converted into radiation. It is shown that swept-up ambient matter is quickly isotropised in the blast wave frame by a relativistic two-stream instability, which provides relativistic particles in the jet wit...
متن کاملConstraining Galactic pγ Interactions with Cosmic Ray Electron and Positron Spectra
High energy protons produced by various sources of cosmic rays, e.g., supernova remnants, pulsar wind nebulae, active galactic nuclei and gamma-ray bursts, participate in pγ and pp interactions. Although pp interactions may be the dominant mechanism in our Galaxy, it is unclear how important pγ process is. We show that the upper bound on the fraction of total number of protons participating in ...
